Visa Application — Step-by-Step
Your streamlined path from DS-160 to interview day, in one place.
Overview
Follow the sections below in order. Keep digital copies of all receipts and confirmations, and maintain a simple folder with originals for your interview day.
Step 1 — Complete the DS-160
Fill out the DS-160 on the Consular Electronic Application Center, upload a compliant photo, and print the confirmation page with the barcode.
- Save your Application ID so you can return later if needed.
- Photo must meet U.S. visa specifications.
- Print and keep the DS-160 confirmation page.
Step 2 — Pay the Visa Application Fee
The application (MRV) fee is mandatory and non-refundable. Pay online or at a designated bank (amount varies by visa type) and retain the receipt.
- Choose preferred payment option on the visa scheduling portal.
- Store the reference number safely; you’ll need it to book your appointment.
Step 3 — Generate the CGI / MRV Receipt
On the U.S. Visa Information & Appointment Services website, create your profile and select Schedule Appointment. Then:
- For online payment: complete the transaction and print the receipt.
- For bank cash payment: print the CGI deposit slip, pay at the bank, and keep the stamped receipt.
Step 4 — Schedule Your Visa Interview
Use the same portal to book your OFC (biometrics) and Consular interview. You’ll need the DS-160 confirmation number, passport number, and fee receipt number. Watch for the email confirmations.
Step 5 — Prepare the Required Documents
Bring originals plus one photocopy unless noted otherwise. A typical set includes:
- Appointment letters (OFC + Consular) from the scheduling portal.
- Valid passport (≥ 6 months beyond intended stay) and bio page copy.
- DS-160 confirmation page.
- Two identical color photographs meeting U.S. photo specs.
- Civil documents (birth/marriage/police certificates; certified English translations where required).
- Financial evidence: recent bank statements, scholarship/assistantship letters, sponsor letters, etc.
Tips & Notes
- Consistency: Names, dates, SEVIS IDs should match across DS-160, I-20, receipts, and passport.
- Interview day: Arrive 20–30 minutes early; answer clearly and concisely.
- Organization: Use a slim folder with labeled sections for quick access at the window.
- Backups: Carry a few spare photocopies of key pages (I-20, DS-160, fee receipts).
